What we do
 
Macomb County Fetal Alcohol Resource Education & Support Coalition works collaboratively to address Fetal Alcohol Spectrum Disorder prevention and advocates for services to help families raising an individual who has FASD
 

MCFARES mission:

The advisory group strengthens the served communities’ ability to eliminate prenatal alcohol exposure and provide support to persons impacted by Fetal Alcohol Spectrum Disorder (FASD) by:

·           Delivering exemplary professional education,

·           Public awareness, and

·           Information resource referral services.

 

MCFARES goals:

  • Increase public awareness of the danger and consequences of prenatal alcohol exposure.

  • Educate health care providers on the spectrum of effects from prenatal alcohol exposure and issues related to alcohol use during pregnancy.

  • Provide resources, information, and referrals to persons seeking information on the use of alcohol during pregnancy.

  • Educate young adults in learning about the risk and consequences of prenatal alcohol exposure before they have an opportunity to conceive children.

  • Improve the quality of life for persons and families affected with FASD by providing resources and supports to these families, schools, courts, and other human service agencies that interact with them.

  • Educate school personnel and child care staff on:

    • The learning, behavioral, neurological, and physical challenges faced by children with FASD.;

    • Strategies for teaching and caring for children with FASD.

 

Services

Parent Liaision

The MCFARES Parent Liaison helps families raising an individual with FASD by:

  • Linking you and your family to county services

  • Helping you navigate through systems of care

  • Assist families in preparing for an Individualized Education Plan meeting (IEP)

  • Advocate for the FASD child

Families Supporting Families, Monthly Support Group (Download PDF)

MCFARES offers an opportunity each month for parents raising an individual with FASD to come together, support one another and learn about community resources, therapies, and education for life with FASD.

 
Online Support Group
The Yahoo online support group is a great way for parents to connect, support one another, share resources including doctors, therapies, parenting tips and behavioral strategies that work.

Fetal Alcohol Spectrum Disorder Awareness Day
September 9th is International FASDay. NineZero. Nine Months, Zero Alcohol is the prevention message heard across the country on this day. It’s a great way to push forward the FASD prevention and treatment agenda. Each year 42,000 children are born with FASD and it is 100% preventable.
